In The End, video by Crystal
In The End by [info]blue_crystal03
Description: Jack tells Gwen the story of his life before Torchwood - his journey with the Doctor and Rose, dying in the process and finally being left behind.

What I think: First, there's the obvious and tech - the editing. Short black flashes to the music, blurring and invert flashes, they all add to the dark theme of the vid. Soon I will get to the plot and you'll understand why it adds tons to the beauty of it. There also the great comparisons between clips in Torchwood and Doctor Who.
So... Jack is pissy and angsty, I think everyone who watched Torchwood figured that one out. But why? The video will tell you.
You can't have the Doctor without the monsters. Jack himself told the Doctor in Parting of the Ways, " I wish I never met you, Doctor. I was better off a coward". Torchwood is special because it's the first time we see entirely how an ex-companion deals with being left behind (there were ideas for spinoffs in the past, none successful. You need a naked Jack for that). It's the sadness and frustration of being dumped, but with a plus: Jack's revival, putting it nicely, really fucked him up. He sees his life as pointless.
Before I go too deep into the outline of a companion-Doctor relationship, I'll get back to Jack. So his life seems pointless. Yes, he works for Torchwood and saves people, but he's empty from inside. He can't die (can you make it more Angel? Damn it). His fun adventures with the Doctor ended up like it ended with every companion, hence the angst and how in the video he sees the Doctor in such a bad way (not the naughty one, though). However, as I mentioned again and again above, what makes him angrier is the fact that he was not only dumped, he was also left flawed, immortal against his will. Jack used to be a risk taker, remember? Now where's the rush?
In the end, nothing matters to Jack.
That's what the video is about. And it's done quite beautifully.
I love it.

Zohar.

I'll say it here once again: thanks so much for the rec. *hugs* As far as I know I never read such a deep analysis of one of my vids. Also definitely interesting to see it through your eyes.

I agree, it's such a tragic thing to give Jack immortality. Now he really seems to be just a shell sometimes. So empty and dead inside. Which just put a question in my head: If TARDIS!Rose saw space and time, could do everthing she wanted, shouldn't she also have seen, what's in store for Jack, if she revives him? She didn't seem all that sad about it, so maybe everything will turn out alright in the end...?

Interesting comparison with Angel. Now, if only they explored Jack a bit more in the remaining episodes...

BTW, couldn't resist and took the test. And I cannot believe it. Maybe it's because I didn't get some of the references?

*ahem*

Ah, many questions. I don't think TARDIS!Rose thought it through, honestly. She was too wrapped in saving the Doctor and stopping the Daleks. Plus, the time vortex really fried her brains. Or perhaps you're right, she knew everything will be alright in the end and Jack'll be 'fixed' (not neutered, just fixed, heh). Still, why put Jack through all this? Maybe he's more valuable than we think.
Companion-Doctor relationships always give me a headache because I think about them in depth and waaay too much.

I always compare my fandoms. However, while Angel is 'woe is me', Jack is 'WOW is me' ;).

I don't know the sixth Doctor yet, but he sure makes his enemies' eyes bleed with all those colours.

I always assumed with the time vortex inside her she could not *not* see everything that's happened and that will happen. Different timelines, how the choices affect them and so on. And then there was Rose, who only wanted her friend to live and now had the power to ressurect him. But you're right, maybe the conscious or subconscious aspect of Rose overshadowed everything. She just did what she believed was right and didn't look at or care for the consequences. With Rose gone we'll probably never know unless the Doctor knows something about it.

But on top of all that the oddest thing about Jack's resurrection for me is when the Doctor, freshly regenerated, says that Jack's busy rebuilding the Earth. How could he know that with all the mess in time Rose did? And showing not one bit of regret/pity/any emotion for his travelling companion?

Yep, Angel had such depressing times, especially season 2. Can't see Jack breaking apart that much right now, either.

I've seen Six only once, 'Mark of the Rani'. Hasn't grown on me yet and from what I heard, he probably won't. Well, and there's the colors... I should probably get all my clothes, and stitch them together randomly now that I'm him. ;)

He didn't. He probably gave Jack this mission to rebuilt the empire (against Jack's will, obviously). The Doctor dumped Jack. Or maybe, just maybe, he assumed Jack is dead and didn't want to upset Rose.
The Doctor rarely shows emotions. When Leela (Fourth Doctor) decided to leave him, she said, "I'll miss you, Doctor". He just smiled, closed the TARDIS door and whispered, "I'll miss you too, savage." That's just the Doctor.

It just seems strange to me, that he knows instantly that he left Jack behind and if he did it on purpose, that he knew in the middle of all of that chaos, he didn't only have to get to the TARDIS fast to get Rose and himself to safety, but also to vanish before Jack enters the room. I didn't see him as that aware at that particular moment. More like single mindedly getting to safety with his last breath.

Ah, yes, I'm haven't gotten used to the way the Doctor says goodbye. Sarah Jane and Grace were my only "live" ones, the rest are from the Confidentials.

(and there I hit the wrong comment button again *rollseyes*)
